January 12, 2010 by Brandon L. Barnett
Google Local Business Center is one of the best things to happen to local mom and pop shops since the creation of the internet. By using this powerful tool business owners can quickly gain top ranking for searchers in their city.
Beyond that, Google Local also gives you the opportunity to add more fuel to your overall SEO strategy. Optimizing your listing will bring you targeted, local traffic and that link juice will compliment your overall link building strategy.
1. Add Photos
They only recently they allowed this. Add as many photos as you can and a company logo. It will help shape your reputation with your customers and add to the strength of your profile
2. Multiple Reviews
It’s important that these be from real customers. You can not have too many. Don’t fake them either, it’s easy to see. Just as with Amazon, people trust products with lots reviews that have kept above three stars. Post up a small sign, thank your customers for their patronage and let them know they can share their experience online.
3. Use Keywords in Company Description
They offer an area where the business representative can describe what the company offers. Use this space for keywords but also be concise in your message so it makes sense to your viewers.
4. Use Keywords in Custom Categories
Instead of browsing through the recommended categories Google Local provides, you can use ‘other’ to provide your own keywords related to your business. This technique can greatly increase the visibility of your listing!
5. Use Keywords in Company Name
Don’t be deceptive by changing your company name, but if your keywords are in the extended business name or LLC, make sure this is the name in which you register.
6. Add a Coupon
Google allows printable coupons to be added by your listing. Even a ‘Free Consultation’ coupon will work here. Just be sure you have some sort of coupon offer added.
7. Create links to the listing
Add a link from your homepage to the listing and encourage current customers or website visitors to review your company.
It’s also helpful to have your address and local phone number (not toll-free) on your site in the header, footer or sidebar. (This trick has proven to bring a big jump in local listing rank.)
8. Add Videos
If your company already has videos on YouTube you can place them right there on the page. If you don’t already have videos online, get to it! Product reviews, shop tours, tips & advice – any video will do really.
