Analysis of Viral Media on YouTube
November 19, 2009 by Brandon L. Barnett
This isn’t exactly new, but I just discovered it and thought it was pretty interesting. Dr. Michael Wesch from the University of Kansas presents a project from his class on Digital Ethnography to the library of congress.
In the video he analyzes the community and experience of the users, their communications and the impact of their relationships. My favorite point made is how people today increasingly express individualism, independence and commercialization. On the other hand they value community, relationships and authenticity.
These are fairly new issues facing society and really covers the nature of context collapse, which we see a lot in communicating online. With youtube, everybody is watching, noone is there.
This video focuses mostly on vlogging, but there are quite a bit of tidbits valuable to social media and viral marketing, specifically with youtube but also in general strategy.
